Additional Dwelling Unit Application

The City of Chicago's Additional Dwelling Unit (ADU) program allows homeowners and other residential property owners to add living space in basement or attic apartments, or in backyard coach houses.

Applying for an ADU is a two-stage process. First, this application will ensure you qualify for the ADU program. Then, once you've received approval, you can apply for a building permit with the Department of Buildings.

Before you can apply for a permit with DOB, you will also need to submit a neighbor notification affidavit, as well as documentation for affordable units if you are applying to create two or more ADUs. You can find those documents at Chicago.gov/ADUdocs.

Before submitting your ADU intake, you will need to make sure you have completed the neighbor notification process in order to submit the neighbor notification affidavit, available at chicago.gov/adudocs.

In addition, if you are applying for two or more ADUs, you will need to complete the affordability documentation, also available at chicago.gov/adudocs.

For property owners adding more than one ADU, half of the new ADUs (rounding down) must be affordable at 60% of Area Median Income. You can see a chart of AMI by bedroom count here. You will be required to record this affordability with the Cook County Clerk, and provide annual affadavits to the Department of Housing.
